GEOL 125: Natural Disasters (Fall 2008)
Before you start
  1. Use the Assignment Planner to keep track of what you should do to get your project done on time. If you put in your email address it will send you reminders.

  2. Get an ILLiad account- this is how you can get stuff that the Libraries does not have. Books will come in about 5-10 days. Articles will be scanned and emailed to you in about 2-5 days (sometimes even that day).

  3. Use RefWorks or the Citation Builder for your citations. Refworks stores them and both can help you create a bibliography. (Neither of these are perfect, you will still need to use a style manual)

Finding Natural Disaster information
There are a number of places that you can look for information about natural disasters. These include:

  • FEMA Map Viewer - View flood and other hazards maps from FEMA.
  • Global Volcanism Program - the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program seeks better understanding of all volcanoes through documenting their eruptions - small as well as large - during the past 10,000 years. Natural Hazards Gateway - Gateway to information from the United State Geological Survey about the seven natural hazards that face the United States. Includes maps for each of the hazards.
  • Natural Hazards Viewer - An interactive map showing earthquakes, tsunami events and volcano locations around the world.
  • NOAAWatch - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration All-Hazard Monitor.
  • Science.gov - Portal to online government information on Earthquakes, Floods and Other Natural Disasters.
  • USGS active fault maps - This web site is provided by the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program as part of the effort to reduce earthquake hazard in the United States.
  • USGS volcanic program - The overall objectives of the Volcano Hazards Program are to advance the scientific understanding of volcanic processes and to lessen the harmful impacts of volcanic activity.

Finding Journal Articles
Journal articles related to Natural Disasters can be found in several databases.

  • GeoRef - Covers the world's technical literature on geology and geophysics. It indexes papers from 13,000 serials, U.S. Geological Survey publications, and dissertations. Start by clicking "Multi-Field Search". Type "Geologic Hazards" in the first search box, changing the drop down menu to "Subject Heading". In the second search box type your location (ex. Kansas) and change the corresponding drop down menu to "Subject Heading" as well. Click "Search" and get your results.
