FIRST STOP HANDBOOKS

All print resources mentioned below are located in Science Reference (1st floor, Hale) unless indicated otherwise. These are a good place to start when looking for basic chemistry information (physical properties, synonyms, CAS registry numbers, structures, information on elements, etc.).

Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, 15th edition.
QD65 . L36 1999
  • Provides information on over 3,000 substances
  • Information in the handbook includes boiling point, chemical name, density, flash point, melting point, molecular formula, molecular weight, refractive index, solubility, spectral information (13C NMR), thermodynamic properties.
  • Easy to use and readily accessible.
  • Good resource for finding conversion factors.
CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics, 82nd edition.
QD65 .H3 2001/2002
  • Provides information for over 12,000 substances
  • Entries in the handbook include: boiling point, chemical name, density, melting point, molecular formula, molecular weight, reference to the primary literature, refractive index, Beilstein registry number, Chemical Abstracts registry number, solubility, structure.
  • The handbook is easy to use, the information is reliable, and this is a good resource to use for a quick look up of basic property information
The Merck Index, 13th edition
RS51 .M4 2001
  • Provides information for over 10,000 substances
  • Information in the handbook includes: boiling point, chemical name, derivatives, molecular formula, molecular weight, references to the primary literature, Chemical Abstracts registry number, spectral information (UV), structure, therapeutic effects.
  • Good source for information on human and veterinary drugs, biologicals, natural products, agricultural compounds, and commercial and laboratory chemicals.
Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook, 7th edition.
TP151 .P45 1997
  • Primarily industrial compounds of interest to chemical engineers
  • Includes physical and chemical data covering vapor pressures, densities , solubilities, critical constants, latent heats, specific heats, thermodynamic properties, and transport properties.
Adrich Handbook of Fine Chemicals & Laboratory Equipment
TP202 .A54a
A multi-use catalog listing over 48,000 chemicals. The Aldrich is particularly useful as a starting point as entries include molecular formula, basic physical data, and cross-references to Beilstein, Merck, Aldrich's Spectra, and CAS registry numbers.

Handbook of Physical Properties of Organic Chemicals (CRC).
QD257.7 .H374 1997
Entries are filed by CAS registry number. Each record gives physical and chemical properties, plus the original source of each property value.
