Exotic Wildlife--Web resources

The following are some web sites dealing with invasive species. This is neither an exclusive, nor an exhaustive list, so you may also want to use a Web Search Engine (such as Google) to find additional information. Again, try searching using some of the suggested terms and keywords.

CERES (California Environmental Resources EvaluationSystem)
Search feature and covers many environmental topics.

Virtual Library of Ecology and Biodiversity
Hosted by Rice Univeristy. Choose Site Index to get a list of topics including U.S.Government and Legislation, Exotic Introductions, Endangered Species and Value of Biodiversity.

Marine and Environmental Education and Research, Inc.
Click on Table of Contents. Some information about Introduced Species and other conservation issues.

Environmental Protection Agency site
It is possible to search this site using key terms, or choose Browse EPA topics to get an alphabetical list of topics. Click on Ecosystems and then Exotics (under Species) or do a search for invasive species. [Try using a variety of terms.] Provides background info on exotic and introduced species, and links to other sites. Largely aquatic focus.

Sea Grant Non Indigenous Species Site (SGNIS)
Site sponsored by the National Sea Grant College Program. National Information Center containing a comprehensive collection of research and educational materials on aquatic nuisance species. Extremely informative site.

Trade and Environment Database
Searchable database. Use terms such as exotic species and non-native species. Pulls up case studies and other research by this group.

IUCN World Conservation Union : Species Survival Commission
Link to guidelines aim to help governments and management agencies around the world prevent the introduction of alien invasive species, or control and eradicate species which threaten their native species, habitats and ecosystems.

ANS (Aquatic Nuisance Species) Task Force on Invasive Species
Includes species descriptions, management plans, reports and publications and descriptions of the program.

Nature Conservancy : Wildland Invasive Species Team
Includes links to information about tools and methods for managing invasive species, photos and alerts . Mostly focuses on plants.

Invasivespecies.gov
Site includes definitions, species profiles, impacts and responses, and contact info for organizations dealing with invasive species. Covers terrestrial and aquatic environments. Provides info about plants, animals and microbes.

Invasive and Exotic Species of North America
Site includes images of invasive species. Also includes links to publications dealing with management. Provides fact sheets on many exotic species including the Asian Longhorned Beetle. Interesting site. Focus mainly on plants and plant predators.

Introduced Species : The Threat to Biodiversity and What can be done.
Provides background info on introduced species. Gives some specific examples. Good overview of problem and concerns. Provides links to agencies and organizations. Also provides references (including journal articles), links to other sites and links to education resources for high school and undergraduate students.

Institute for Biological Invasions
From the University of Tennessee. Interesting site. Provides background information with extensive references. Also have an extensive library of resources pertaining to this topic. Holdings are searchable, and include journal articles; this is an excellent resource for searching for research materials. (These would need to be located at your library or through your library’s interlibrary loan office.) Also includes an extensive list of links organized by topic. Also includes in-depth information about “invader of the month” species.

Union of Concerned Scientists - Invasive species page
Provides general information about the science of invasive species. Also includes information about management, the National Invasive Species Act, specific high profile invaders and suggests ways to avoid introducing new species.
