History of Agriculture and Rural Life in Kansas
A Bibliography of State and Local Literature 1820-1945

This bibliography was compiled as part of the United States Agricultural Information Network's (USAIN) National Preservation Project (http://usain.org/Preservation/preservinitiative.html), a National Endowment for the Humanities funded effort to identify and preserve state and local literature relating to agriculture and rural life in America between 1820 and 1945. Kansas is one of 24 states participating in this project. It is hoped that the project will eventually include similar literature from all 50 states.

More information about the project at the national level can be found at:

National Agricultural Library Preservation Projects page ( http://www.nal.usda.gov/preserve/aboutus/sitemap.shtml#national )

Using specific general and subject criteria (link to criteria doc), approximately 2700 books and serials were identified as being potentially useful for studying the history of Kansas agriculture, rural economy and society, and human ecology in the bibliography phase. This bibliography was then reviewed by a select panel of experts and titles ranked by their priority for preservation. Reviewers of the Kansas bibliography were:

  • Dr. Don Erickson
Professor of Agricultural Economics, K-State (retired)
  • Dr. George Ham
Former Head of the Department of Agronomy, K-State (retired)
Former Associate Dean and Associate Director for Research with K-State Research and Extension
  • Dr. David Schafer
Professor and Extension Specialist, Meats in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, K-State (retired)
  • Dr. Virginia Slimmer
Former Assistant Dean and Professor in the College of Human Ecology, K-State (retired)
  • Dr. Homer Socolofsky
Professor Emeritus of History, K-State (retired)
    University Historian
During the filming phase 237 of the higher priority titles were filmed. One copy of the microfilm is available at Kansas State University's Hale Library and another at the National Agricultural Library, Bethesda, Maryland.
