K-State Libraries
Government Information

As a member of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), the K-State Libraries serve the government information needs of K-State faculty, students, staff, and the Citizens of Kansas. We provide a wide array of services to meet these needs.

The K-State Libraries have policies in place to assure free public access to government information. These policies for public service and access meet the requirements of the FDLP.

Reference Service

Hale Library’s Help Desk, located on the 2nd floor, offers personal service to patrons seeking assistance. The Help Desk utilizes a referral model, meaning that more in-depth questions may be referred to our Subject Specialists.

Patrons may also contact the Government Information Subject Specialist directly.

Internet

The Government Information webpage contains links to U.S. and Kansas Government sites, selected international sites, and other resources. These links have been selected to meet the needs of K-State and local/regional users. The webpage also includes links to free government databases and statistical resources.

Hale Library contains over 200 computers which have full access to Internet resources. These computers are available to members of the public as well as the K-State community.

Databases

The K-State Libraries subscribe to a number of specialized databases and digital products related to government and law. Unless noted as a “Free Resource,” these products are limited to K-State faculty, students, staff, or to anyone using a computer in the library.

There are also links to free U.S. Government databases on the Government Information website.

Collections

The primary U.S. and Kansas government publications collections are located on the third floor of Hale Library. There is also an off-site storage annex housing older material. Most, but not all, of the titles in the collection can be accessed via the library’s catalog. The catalog also contains links to thousands of U.S. Government titles available via the Internet.

The collections are classified and shelved using the Superintendent of Documents call number scheme, a different arrangement than used in other K-State Libraries’ collections.

Patrons needing assistance finding items in the catalog or collection are encouraged to contact the Help Desk, Hale Library 2nd floor, or the Government Information Subject Specialist. Because the complete collection is not yet cataloged, patrons are encouraged to contact the Government Information Subject Specialist whenever they are unable to find the government information they seek.

The K-State Libraries have collection development polices in place for government documents and maps to assure that the tangible and electronic collections meet the needs of our communities.
