K-State Open Access Publishing Fund Banner

About the fund

KOAPF supports the goal of making K-State research and scholarship immediately, freely and globally available. When support is not available from other sources, the KOAPF will assist K-State authors by paying reasonable article processing fees for publishing in open access journals.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Authors
    • Any K-State faculty member or researcher may request up to $3,000 per year to pay for open access article processing fees. Awards are limited to one per author per year. Exceptions to this policy may be made on a case by case basis depending on funding balances and costs of author fees.
  • Multiple Authors
    • Funding applications for multi-authored articles should be submitted by only one group member. Funding will only be considered if lead or primary authors are from K-State.
  • Eligible Content

Non-Eligible Charges

Paid Access (hybrid) Journals as well as Elsevier Open Access, Wiley Online Open, Springer Open Choice, ACS Author Choice, and many others. Payment of fees for extraditing publication is not necessary and will not be funded.

Application Process

Researchers should complete the online application. Once approved, notices will be sent to the applicant and department chair.

K-REx Submission Requirement

Applicants receiving funding from KOAPF are expected to submit a post-review and final draft of the article to K-State’s institutional repository (K-REx) at the time funding notification is received.

Please send the final approved manuscript to krex@k-state.edu.

Please include the following statement in the author’s acknowledgements:

Publication of this article was funded in part by the Kansas State University Open Access Publishing Fund.

Reducing Publishing Charges

There are several ways for you to publish open access (OA) at a reduced or even no cost in quality scholarly journals.  These include:

  • Applying for the OA publishing fund to cover article processing charges (APC) up to $3,000.

  • Publishing within an OA journal that does not charge APC fees.  You can find journals like this by searching the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

  • Publishing with publishers like Open Library for Humanities that publish at no cost to the authors.

  • Publishing with publishers that give K-State authors a discount on APC’s

  • Applying for an APC waiver.  Some publishers will waive the APC if requested.  These waivers may be based on need and can range from a partial to full waiver of APCs.

  • Publishing in a traditional journal with a contract addendum that allows the author to retain the right to deposit the final publisher article into an OA repository, like our institutional repository K-REx.

  • Checking with the journal to see if they have an OA program.  Some publishers like the Royal Chemistry Society are offering their authors, reviewers, and/or editors points or credits for their service to the journal.  Authors can use these credits or points to publish their articles open access.
