About the position
The purpose of the Math and Physics Library is to support the research and educational needs of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in the Departments of Physics and Mathematics. This is done through organizing, circulating, and providing access to specialized subject materials and by providing advanced reference services.
All Student Assistants at the Library Help Desk are expected to willingly and effectively perform all tasks assigned, to work in any area as needed.
There are two (2) positions available, each beginning January 7, 2019.
Part-time Student Assistant II position, 12-18 hours per week during our fall and spring hours of Monday through Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm, and during our summer hours of Monday through Friday 8am-5pm.
Prefer availability to work during university breaks and summer.
Description of Duties
The successful applicant will be trained for the following duties:
Working at the library counter: Friendly and resourceful when assisting patrons or lending materials to patrons. Able to check on the status of library materials, answer questions, and direct patrons to staff members as needed.
Discharge materials: Correctly check in borrowed library materials from patron accounts. Return materials to their proper locations and shelve them in Library of Congress order.
Answer the telephone: Answer general questions, refer to staff when necessary and take messages.
Shelf reading the collection: Keep books and other materials clean and orderly by verifying they are in proper Library of Congress call number order.
Other duties: Shelve periodicals and newspapers, regularly clean the library and its equipment, troubleshoot technology problems, keep accurate statistics, maintain the Google calendar for the conference room, and perform other duties as assigned.

Student Assistants are in contact with K-State students, faculty and staff on a daily basis to provide reference help and circulation services, to resolve patron problems, and to locate or request materials. All of these duties require excellent customer service.
Occasionally patrons can prove to be stressful. You must respond appropriately and show patience.
Student Assistants may occasionally be asked to work extra hours or different shifts, sometimes on short notice. Therefore flexibility is required.
Student Assistants must strive for 100% accuracy. Errors could result in unhappy patrons, poor customer service, and bad public relations for the library.
Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining a record of satisfactory work performance through efficient and accurate completion of duties.
