Finding Compact Discs (CDs)
I can't find it! Now what?
Finding Videos, CDs, Scores, etc.
To find media items (videos, compact discs, LPs, audiocassettes, etc.) and printed music, use
the
Limits option in K-State Libraries' Online Catalog.
The
Limits feature works most effectively in the "Guided Keyword"
search. Use this rather than a Simple Search. Limits do not work for simple author, call number,
or subject searches.
- In Guided Keyword, before you search, click on the Advanced Search Limits button:
One or more items (use Ctrl-click to select multiple items) may be chosen from each drop-down
list for limiting; including date, language, location within the library, and for our purposes,
"Medium" and "Type."
- To find videos, select "Videorecording" in the drop-down menu under "Medium."
- To find sound recordings, select "Musical Recording" under "Type."
- To find music scores, selected "Printed Music" under "Type."
Click on the "Set Limits" button when finished. The search screen will return displaying
a "Search Limits are in Effect" message and a small picture of a pencil eraser. To change or
add limits, click the Limits icon again.
Search for keyword, title, author, and/or subject using the drop-down "Search In:" menu.
- For distinctive titles, such as "Symphonie Fantastique," a title search is effective.
- If the title is generic (a symphony by Beethoven for example), you should combine the title
and author name.
- Limited to Sound Recordings, Beethoven as an author brings hundreds of titles.
- "Symphony" as a title brings hundreds of entries!
- Combining "symphony" and "Beethoven" will yield less than 100 entries, which includes both
LPs and CDs.
- Click on the "Search" button to get results.
Clicking on the eraser image will erase all limits.
How do I search for compact discs (CDs) only?
To filter for compact discs, add the word "compact" as an additional keyword search term. When
added to the Beethoven Symphony search, the list of titles is much smaller.
See the Catalog
Help Screen (scroll to bottom) for more detail on all search functions.
I can't find it! Now what?
Do not give up! You may be misspelling words
or using search terms that don't fit. Many media items use other languages
with alternative spellings. Contact the
General
Reference Desk or e-mail your
subject librarian for assistance.
