THE FRIENDS OF THE K-STATE LIBRARIES
ANNUAL MEETING

Wednesday, May 20, 2009  11:45a.m.  Manhattan Country Club

Minutes

I.          Greeting and Remarks         

Sharon Reagan, outgoing President, welcomed attendees at 12:13pm and highlighted the Friends activities (2008-2009) during her presidency: 

  • Raised over $22,000 through the 21st Gala, "A World of Friends", in collaboration with the Friends of the International Programs.
  • Purchased a two millionth commemorative volume, The Frugal Housewife, printed in North America in 1795 for K-State Libraries.
  • Sponsored a lecture by Blake Gumprecht on his award winning book, The American College Town.
  • Provided receptions for a lecture on Ken Davis by Ralph Titus and for the opening of the K-State First Ladies Exhibit.
  • Presented Jon and Ruth Ann Wefald with a lifetime honorary membership for their support of the Libraries for over twenty-three years.
  • Instituted an ongoing book sale which is extremely popular with library patrons.
  • Approved financial support for the following projects:
    • continuing restoration of the Great Room Murals
    • oral history interviews for the University Archives by Ralph Titus
    • purchase of library signage in the elevators and hallways of Hale Library to the Historic Great Room

Sharon thanked outgoing Board Members (John Carlin, Mike Clark, Steve Levin, Ruthie Nellis, Bob Newhouse) for their service.  She welcomed and introduced the new Board Officers and Members-at-Large elected at the Friends Board meeting in April 2009.

Special recognition was given to Bob Kruh and Richard Coleman. Bob was a charter member of the Friends and served as the group’s first President. He was also the organization’s Treasurer for many years. Bob is now taking on a new role as Honorary Advisor to the Friends. Richard Coleman, the Friends Historian, was a charter member and revised the History of the Friends, 1998 – present. He was also instrumental on gala, by-laws, nominating and long-range planning committees.

II.          Presentation of the 2009 Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty Award  

Sharon Reagan presented the Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty Award for 2009 to Marcia Stockham, Education Librarian and Chair of Social Sciences and Humanities at K-State Libraries. Chosen from a record pool of twelve nominees and thirty-six total nominations, Professor Stockham’s nominators frequently cited her dedication to the College of Education. She also has published and presented at the national level, assumed leadership roles at the state level, and remains active in national professional organizations.

III.          Annual Business Meeting         

Joleen Hill, incoming President, convened the meeting at 12:25 p.m. and gave welcoming remarks. She thanked Sharon Reagan for her service as President of the Friends and presented her with a Ralph Fontenot watercolor of Hale Library.

It was moved and seconded that the 2008 Annual Meeting Minutes be approved as distributed. Motion passed.

Bob Kruh, Treasurer, presented the Treasurer’s Report which stood as presented. The ending balance as of April 30, 2009 was $130,631.14.

It was moved and seconded that the By-Laws revisions be approved as distributed. Motion passed.

Joleen announced upcoming Friends' activities:

  • Jazz in June, June 12, 7:30p.m., Hale Library Hemisphere Room
  • Hale Library Concert Series, to be announced August 2009
  • "What So Proudly We Hale", Library Gala, November 13, 6:30p.m., Hale Library Great Room

IV.          Remarks and Updates from Dean Lori Goetsch         

Dean Goetsch welcomed Joleen Hill as incoming President and thanked Cherie Geiser for her liaison work with the Board. Highlights from her remarks follow:

  • The second phase of the Great Room mural restoration will begin May 23, 2009. Two murals will be completely restored (end painting and sealing).
  • Marcia Stockham (Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty) and Maxine Ganske (Classified Employee of the Year) were recognized for their efforts which resulted in their being the recipients of these awards.
  • Mike Haddock was one of nineteen university-wide faculty to receive a Professorial Performance Award this year.
  • Significant renovation of Hale Library's 2nd Floor will occur this summer. Money was budgeted for this project two years ago, but weather disasters prevented K-State Facilities from starting the project as planned.
  • K-State Libraries' work force will be down 15% by fall semester. Staff are using the budgetary reductions and hiring freeze for fy2010 as an opportunity to review workflows, create efficiencies and create a new organization structure.

V.          Program: "SALUTE: Military History Collections in the K-State Libraries"         

Tony Crawford, University Archivist, provided an overview of military history collections located in the University Archives. He thanked Cindy Harris and Cindy Von Elling for their presentation technical support.

Tim Watts, History Librarian, discussed the breadth and depth of K-State Libraries circulating military history collections.

VI.          Adjournment         

The meeting was adjourned at 1:23 pm.
