Reserves: How long can I have a reserves item?

Check out times range from 2 hours to 2 weeks. These are determined by the instructor who places the item on reserve. Most reserve items are listed as 2-hour closed, which means it is available for 2 hours and it must remain in the library. To find out what the check out time is for a specific item on Hale Library's Reserves, call 785-532-3014 or visit Library Help on Hale Library's 2nd floor.

Self Check-out Stations in Hale Library

image of a self checkmachineTwo 3M Self-Check stations, located on the 2nd floor of Hale Library, are available for use whenever the building is open, even after the librarians go home. 

This sounds great, how do I use them?

  1. Swipe your K-State ID card in the reader
  2. Place your item’s barcode under the red laser beam
  3. Place the spine of your item into the v-shaped crevice to de-sensitize it
  4. Repeat this process for each item you wish to borrow
  5. Video tapes/VHS, cassette tapes, and items without out barcodes need to be checked out at Library Help during librarian hours.

Account: How can I see what books I have checked out and when they are due?

 

Check your account from MyLibrary Login, available from "I want to ... Renew books" at the libraries' website or from K-State's website. Enter your eID and password.

From your account you can see materials you have checked out, when they are due, and if they are renewable. Renew them online by clicking the box next to the item(s) then clicking the renew button at the bottom of the titles list. Make sure to check the due date to ensure date was changed.

  1. If you are a K-State student, staff or faculty member, you can log in to Interlibrary Services. They will try to locate it from another library and hold it at Library Help for you to check out.
  2. You can request the book be "recalled" from the person who currently has it. Note: The book may later be recalled from you!
    • When you are looking at the Catalog record for the item you want, under Actions click the "Place a Request" link
    • Sign in with your eID and password and select "Recall"
    • The person who has it must return it in 2 weeks and it will be held at Library Help under your name.
  3. You can see if nearby libraries have the item you want by...
    • Entering the WorldCat database and searching for the item you want
    • In the list of search results, click "Libraries Worldwide" which list libraries that own the item, with any in Kansas at the top
    • Visit the library that owns the item.
  4. You can try to find in Google Books an online copy of the full text, or at least the table of contents and selected pages.

You can check out reserve items at Library Help on the 2nd floor of Hale Library and at the help desks at Fiedler Engineering, Math/Physics, Weigel Architecture, and Veterinary Medical Libraries.

What you need:
 Your K-State ID
  Course info. Example: ENGL 251

(We can search for materials by instructor name, book title, or course number, but the course number is the simplest way to find materials.) Other details you need to be aware of:

  • Reserves' items are only available during the building hours: Hale Library's library help hours and Fiedler Engineering, Math/Physics, Weigel Architecture, and the Veterinary Medical Libraries building hours.
  • Fines begin on a reserve item the minute it is late, so please pay attention to when the item is due.
  • Reserve items cannot be renewed.

Loan periods depend on the type of patron and the type of library material.

Renew: Why can't I renew my material?

This could be happening for several reasons:

  • Some items can't be renewed, like bound journals and reserved items.
  • Another patron may have placed a recall request for the item or asked to be placed on a waiting list for the item.
  • You may have reached the renewal limit.
  • Your record may have been blocked because of fines.

If you are 18 years of age or older and a Kansas resident, you may do so using a Community Patron Library Card for $10.00 a year. Other types of patrons who qualify to check out items, as well as loan periods and renewable information, are listed at Who can borrow?

Alumni services: Can alumni use databases or check out materials?

 

Kansas State University at Manhattan

As an alumnus, you can check out materials from the Libraries with a current K-State Alumni Association Card. If you’re not a current Alumni Association member, you can still check out materials with purchase of a Community Patron Card ($10/year fee).

These cards do not enable off-campus access to education-restricted licensed online journals and databases. However, anyone visiting the campus can access most of those resources from public computers in Hale Library.

Hale Library

If you have previously checked out items and you have a card with photo identification, staff at Library Help will check out items to you. Self-check out machines only work from a K-State ID.

Exception: You must use a K-State ID card to check out materials from Reserves, as many of those items are owned by instructors.
