K-State Libraries policies have dictated that we conform to national standards and use successive entry cataloging for titles added to our database. However, under certain circumstances we will choose latest entry. Candidates for this type of treatment should be forwarded to the Serials Cataloger.
Latest entry CANNOT be used in the following situations:
- The volume numbering of the new title begins again with "1"
- Analyzed serials
- Serial splits or mergers
Additionally, should latest entry cataloging create a lengthy or complicated record; or, the scope of the serial changes drastically, successive entry cataloging is recommended.
Procedures for latest entry
OCLC Record:- Choose earliest version of record
- Maintain KKS holdings on all OCLC records
008 S/L: change to 1
Freq: current frequency
Reg: current regularity
Dates: check
Place of pub: current
022 Add ISSNs of new title
035 1st 035 should be the current title; list previous OCLC nos. in separate 035s
from latest to earliest
245 Reflects current title
247 List previous titles (use indicators 10) in chronological order
from latest to earliest; add |f for vols.
and/or dates and |x [ISSN]; delete initial articles
246 Add for variations of current title
222 Add for current title if known
260 Reflect current place and publisher
310 Reflect current frequency
321 List previous frequencies with dates in |b; use "frequencies varies" for
numerous freq changes
4XX Add for new series if needed
5XX Add or update as needed, especially 550s to reflect earlier publishers
547 Use for notes to explain 247s if necessary
6XX Enhance subjects if needed
710 Add for current issuing bodies; must be justified by 260 and/or notes
