Subject Headings in UKM Records

Purpose:To identify those records that have been input or upgraded by the British National Library (UKM) that have subject headings with a second indicator of 4, so that these headings can be deleted from the bibliographic record. This will ensure a less confusing display in the OPAC.


  1. Check all bib records for subject headings (600, 610, 611, 630, 650, and 651) that have a second indicator of 4.

  2. If a record has such subject headings, check to see if the subject headings are duplicated with a second indicator of 0.

  3. If the headings are truly duplicates, delete the headings with the second indicator of 4. DO NOT delete any other subject headings.

  4. If the headings are NOT duplicates, leave the headings with the second indicator of 4 in the record. DO NOT delete these headings. If there are no LC subject headings on the record, place the item on the problem copy shelves.
