Purpose: All title entries in all monographic records should be checked to ensure that they will file correctly in the catalog. This is especially true of titles that start with an article (a, an, the or their equivalents in foreign languages). Some title fields have filing indicators; other fields do not. Use the following guidelines to check each title field.
Note: For a list of initial articles in several different languages, see Initial Articles to Be Disregarded in Title Entries.
The following fields have filing indicators. The title should be entered as it is found on the piece (including initial articles, if any), but the filing indicator should be set so that those initial articles are skipped when the title is searched. The filing indicator is the number of characters in the article, plus spaces, punctuation, and diacritics that precede the first significant word. If a title does not begin with an initial article, it should be 0 (zero).
