K-State Libraries
Labelling Items and Inputting Call Numbers for Government Publications
SuDoc and KDoc call numbers are different from Library of Congress call numbers in several significant ways:

    - no decimal points are added automatically before Cutter numbers

    - colons indicate line breaks and are not actually written on the piece or the label; however, the colons are input as part of the call number on Voyager

    - slashes are an integral part of the call number, both for the label and on Voyager

    - when a letter precedes a number (e.g. NAS 1), always write/input a space between the letter and number

    - generally, the SuDoc system uses only the last three digits to designate years (i.e. 1998 becomes 998); however there are exceptions, so the numbers should be written as they appear on the shipping list or the 086 field of the bib. record. Kansas Documents, on the other hand, utilize all four digits of the year. (NOTE: the holding and item records should use all four digits of the year).

    - with two exceptions (Y3 and Y4), when writing call numbers put the letter(s) on the first line and the number(s) on the second. For Y3 and Y4 items, both the letter and number are on the first line.

    - for periodicals, if enumeration is present it becomes the last element on the label - do not also use the chronology; if only chronology is present, use it

    - on Voyager, the first 852 indicator is different (3 for SuDoc and 8 for KDoc)

    - on Voyager, the entire call number goes into the |h (i.e. no |i is used)
