Mamie Alexander was born in Humboldt, KS, in 1876. She graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in printing and general science in 1902, serving as a clerk in the Farm Department at KSAC, 1902-1905. She married Frank W. Boyd, editor of the Phillips County Post, in 1905. Boyd was President of the Women's Kansas Day Club in 1930 and was the first woman president of KSU's Alumni Association, 1930-1932. After Frank W. Boyd died in 1947, she remained as associate editor of the Jewell County Record, 1947-1973. She was named Outstanding Newspaper Woman of Kansas in 1956 and was the first person to receive the distinguished service award in journalism from KSU in 1957, the same year she was named Kansas Press Woman of the Year. Boyd was chosen Kansan of the Year in 1959. KSU honored her by changing the name of Northwest Hall to Boyd Hall in 1960. She was named Kansas Mother of the Year in 1965. She was the first recipient of the Emma C. McKinney Award in 1966 and the first woman to receive the William Allen White Award for Journalistic Merit in 1967. Boyd wrote an account of her days at KSAC entitled: Rode a Heifer Calf Through College in 1971. She died in October of 1973. In 1976, Mamie Boyd was inducted into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame.
