18 Mar 2004 - Mexican Manuscript Cookbooks

Special Collections recently purchased two very fine manuscript cookbooks from Mexico. One of the two was purchased by the NEH committee, which annually selects books, movies, compact discs, musical scores, and microfilm sets for the Libraries' collections in the humanities.

The cookbook purchased by the NEH is dated November 12, 1906 and is identified to Felipa M. Razo de Rojas from Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico. The book is a large ledger format with over 500 recipes ordered from A to Z. The book's compiler added several sections with additional recipes.

The second cookbook was probably passed down through one family and was added to by three different women. The first recipes begin in the early 19th century and the last recipes appear to have been added in the last quarter of the 19th century. Unfortunately, the identities of the women are unknown and where they lived is also unknown. With some scholarly study of the ingredients and style of the dishes, it may be narrowed down to a particular locality. These are the first non-English manuscript cookbooks in our collection and are fine addition to our diverse cookery collection holdings.
