Printers Device from the Drach Missal An outstanding example among the volumes housed in the Rare Books Department is Diderot's acclaimed Encyclopedie (1751- 1780). The 35 volumes of this work are a monument in the history of European thought and had considerable influence in establishing widespread uniformity of terminology, concept, and procedure in all fields of science and technology.

One of the oldest books in the department is Missale Ordinis Sancti Benedicti (1498). Known as the Drach Missal, it is a superb example of early printing and bookbinding.
