MISSION

The Marjorie J. and Richard L. D. Morse Family and Community Public Policy Scholarship provides funds for a K-State undergraduate student to work on a project that impacts public policy and involves community service. AWARD

A $3,000 scholarship for summer 2012 is available to any undergraduate student enrolled at Kansas State University. The scholarship is awarded in three installments over the summer, $1,000 when the scholarship is granted, $1,000 approximately half way through the summer after the intern has demonstrated substantial progress on the project, and $1,000 upon completion.

The funds are deposited in the student's financial account with K-State rather than awarded directly to the recipient.

GUIDELINES

The scholarship is awarded to support an undergraduate student’s project that involves community service and has the potential to impact public policy. The scholarship experience should include an internship opportunity secured by the student, or student’s faculty sponsor, that is appropriate for the submitted project. The internship can be with a public agency, community organization, educational institution, or other policy or community based entity. The internship location is not limited to Manhattan. The internship must be secured prior to submitting an application.

The proposed outcome must be of benefit to an organization, group of people within the community, or an educational program. The final outcome does not have to occur during the three-month period (e.g., publication of article prepared during the internship), nor does it have to be implemented as submitted; however, the proposal must demonstrate the potential for success.

It is preferable that the recipient utilize the Consumer Movement Archives holdings to enhance the recipient’s knowledge and background in the subject area(s) related to their internship. However, it is understood that projects that meet the other scholarship criteria may not be documented in the historical collections of the CMA. The recipient must prepare a final report for the K-State Libraries that provides an overview of the project goals, overall experience, and outcomes of the recipient’s internship, along with documentation that was created during the internship.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The scholarship is made possible through an endowment established by Marjorie J. and Richard L. D. Morse.

The role of the K-State Libraries and the Morse Department of Special Collections, in addition to awarding the scholarship, is to guide the student through the process of fulfilling the obligations of the scholarship and, as necessary, provide research assistance to a recipient who needs to use the Consumer Movement Archives. The project is to be directed by a K-State faculty member and/or an internship sponsor.

HOW TO APPLY

Each recipient must submit:

• A resumé and letter of application explaining the student's intended career path, why the student is interested in the development of public policy, and the experience they hope to gain.


• A project outline that includes a goal statement and a detailed plan for meeting the goal.


• A letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor with expertise and a shared interest in supporting the project.


• A letter of invitation from the internship sponsor identified in the application (it is possible that the faculty mentor and the internship sponsor are the same person).

A committee of K-State faculty reviews the applications and selects the recipient based on the quality of the submission, including the internship proposal, which best satisfies the guidelines of the scholarship.
