The papers of James C. Carey were donated to the University Archives by Dr. Carey prior to his retirement as Professor of History at KSU. The material spans the years 1948-1981, and it is arranged alphabetically by name and subject in 8 document boxes (3 linear feet).
The largest portion of the collection documents Dr. Carey's research for his book, Kansas State University: The Quest for Identity, and projects as University Historian. A number of files are associated with Dr. Carey's work on campus, especially his active participation in the American Association of University Professors, and Faculty Senate.
Dr. Carey exchanged letters with a number of U.S. Senators and representatives about different issues. Included in the "Correspondence-Political" folder are letters from Larry Winn, Martha Keys, James B. Pearson, Bob Dole, Keith G. Sebelius, William R. Roy and Edwin C. Johnson. Most of the papers concern Richard Nixon, Watergate and the Vietnam conflict. A letter from Gov. John Carlin about faculty salaries is in the file.
A separate file contains letters with Gale W. McGee, U.S. Senator from Wyoming (1958-1977), and U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States (1977-1981). Carey and McGee were classmates in college and they corresponded over the Years. Carey was involved with bringing McGee to KSU for the Little United Nations Assembly (1959), and as a Convocation speaker (1978).
The papers provide important background information about campus activities, especially from 1948, the year Dr. Carey joined the faculty, to 1977, when his history of KSU was published. Although a number of clippings and reports were photocopied and filed in the Vertical File of the University Archives, researchers wanting comprehensive information about the University should consult the collection.
Very few of the papers concern Dr. Carey's direct involvement with the Department of History and his teaching of U.S.-Latin American history at K-State. There is material about his A.I.D. assignment in Panama, 1968-1969, while a visiting Professor for the University of Oklahoma.
Another series of unprocessed Carey papers containing teaching materials and research files for his publications about Latin America is housed in the University Archives.
