Scope and Content

The Larry Bland Papers (1989-1991) organizes into two boxes a selection of the documents pertaining to Larry Bland's nineteen years as managing editor of the Journal of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute. The papers, spanning two boxes, include some correspondence, copyright information, and a selection of draft cover templates of the Journal.

The Jennifer Speelman Papers (2004-2005) collects in one box material Jennifer Speelman and her staff created for the 2005 SMH Annual Meeting at the Citadel. The files contain member's packets, registration forms, vendor information, and some correspondence.

The Advantage Press Papers (1994-2010) collects in two boxes the back issue stock of the Society for Military History's publisher of their newsletter, The Headquarters Gazette.

The Richard Kohn Papers (1978-1999) collects in eight boxes, arranged alphabetically by subject, the administrative files of an SMH founder and officer, Richard Kohn. Mostly consisting of correspondence memoranda and reports, these documents span Kohn's years of service to AMI and SMH, including such positions as Trustee, president, and member of the Nominating and Long Range Planning Committees. Some topics of interest to researchers will include gradual constitutional and structural changes to organization, the transition of the organization from AMI into the SMH, and the accompanying transition of the organization's main publication, Military Affairs at Kansas State University, into The Journal of Military History at Virginia Military Institute. Other smaller topics include the creation of regional coordinators under the SMH, a brief business relationship with Military History Quarterly, and the organization's advocacy regarding archival historical matters through the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) for the Promotion of History.

The Headquarters Gazette Publications (1988-2012), organized into one box and arranged chronologically, contains a nearly complete run of the AMI/SMH newsletter, ranging from the office produced issues of 1988 to the present professionally formatted quality paper stock.

The Harold Langley Papers (1934-2007) collects in two boxes the papers of the AMI Secretary-Treasurer and the AMI/SMH Archivist, containing select correspondence from prominent points in the history of the American Military Institute and the Society for Military History. Most of the folders hold documents relating to membership drives, council and trustees meetings, the publication of Military Affairs, and various research projects undertaken by the archivist. Some researchers will also be interested in folders relating to the professional level correspondence between Military Affairs editor Victor Gondos and Captain B. H. Liddell Hart, historical treatments on the Plains Wars, and the evolution of the Moncado Prize.

The Journal of Military History Publications (2010-Present), organized into one box, contains the recent issues of the Society for Military History's flagship publication, the Journal of Military History.
