In 2007 members of the Boyd family donated the McDill "Huck" and Marie Boyd Papers and Mamie Alexander Boyd Papers to University Archives/Manuscripts of the Morse Department of Special Collections. Marie's daughter, Pat, and grand children Anne Brockhoff and Tom Krauss were the donors. The bulk of the papers were transferred to the University Archives from the home of Marie and Huck Boyd in Phillipsburg, Kansas after Marie's death in 2006.
The Huck and Marie Boyd Papers (1905-2006) are housed in 123 boxes and occupy 78 linear feet of shelf space. They are organized in 15 series: 1) Personal: Family and Biographical; 2) Correspondence; 3) Political; 4) Organizations and Subjects; 5) Speeches; 6) Awards and Honors 7) Marie Boyd; 8) Travel; 9) Financial; 10) Printed Material; 11) Oversize; 12) Scrapbooks; 13) Audio Visual; 14) Photographs, and; 15) Artifacts. In addition, approximately 160 cookbooks and publications related to Kansas history were separated from the collection and added to the library holdings of Special Collections.
The Huck and Marie Boyd Papers and Mamie Boyd Papers collectively constitute a major body of material and information related to a variety of research topics, in addition to the specific activities and lives of various members of the Boyd family. The research strengths include politics, women's organizations and history, newspaper journalism, Kansas history, and rural life, to name a few.
The organization of the Boyd Papers was a team project shared by staff members of the University Archives. In addition to Tony Crawford, University Archivist, student employees provided substantial assistance with processing the papers over a two year period; they include Rosanne George, Jonathan Root, Brian Sutton, Katy Frederickson, and, most recently, Jessica Heuback and Taylor Wulf.
Researchers interested in Huck and Marie Boyd are advised to consult the Mamie Alexander Boyd Papers. Her collection contains substantial information about the Boyd family.

The McDill "Huck" and Marie Boyd Papers (1905-2004) document their association with numerous people, organizations, and business interests through their diverse professional and personal activities and interests. The contents have state, regional, and national significance. The papers include a variety of formats and topics and they are organized accordingly into 15 series: 1) Personal-Family and Biographical, 1905-2006; 2) Correspondence, 1934-1988; 3) Political, 1932-1996; 4) Organizations and Subjects, 1949-1995; 5) Speeches, 1948-1980; 6) Awards and Honors, 1956-1993; 7) Marie Boyd, 1929-2004; 8) Travel, 1957-1982; 9) Financial, 1933-1981; 10) Printed Material, 1904-2004; 11) Oversize; 12) Scrapbooks, 1950-1982; 13) Audio Visual, 1960-1984; 14) Photographs; 15 Artifacts, 1936-1992. The collection is stored in 123 boxes that comprise 90 linear feet of shelf space. Approximately 150 cookbooks and publications related to Kansas and local history have been transferred to the library holdings of Special Collections.
The papers have numerous research strengths including, but not limited to, state and national politics, newspaper journalism, women's organizations and history, Kansas history, Kansas State University, family history, and rural Kansas, including Phillips and Jewell counties. The strongest areas of the papers are related to Huck Boyd's political activities and Marie's involvement with women’s organizations. These research strengths, and others, are described in more detail within each series described below.
Housed in two boxes, Series 1-Personal-Family and Biographical (1905-2006) is divided into two areas. The first consists of documents related to Huck and Marie's family and contains correspondence, school related items, printed material, and other material. Family members represented are Huck's parents, Mamie and Frank Boyd, Sr., and children along with his brother, Frank "Bus" Boyd, Jr. Documents associated with their grandchildren are also included. The second box contains material more closely tied to Huck including documents related to his years at K-State (1925-1927), biographical descriptions and documents containing information written at the time of his death in 1987.
Series 2, Correspondence (1934-1988) is organized in 8 boxes. There are several sub-series which remain in the order in which they were received, including letters filed alphabetically by correspondent and chronologically. Included are letters from business associates, educators, government officials, family members, and friends. People of interest include: Ross Beach, Harry Darby, Archie Dykes, Alf Landon, Ralph Lashbrook, James McCain, Payne Ratner, and Fred Seaton. The Series also includes invitations, Christmas cards, and 50th wedding anniversary cards.
The largest series, and most important in terms of research potential for students and scholars, is Series 3-Political (1932-1996). Especially strong are the correspondence and documents related to Huck's campaigns to win the Republican Party's gubernatorial nomination in Kansas in 1960 and 1964; he was not selected. Documentation of the 1960 campaign is especially strong and contains correspondence, much of which is organized by county. Correspondence files of Kent Culbertson and John Brookens are included. Other files include publicity, speeches, schedules and itineraries, "Huckleberry" songs and cheers, printed material, and various other items. The files reveal Marie's active involvement in the campaign.
The papers related to Boyd's 1964 campaign as not as large in quantity as those in 1960. They include correspondence, lists, speeches and announcements (including Marie's), and printed material.
An important sub-series related to Huck's political career include files related to Bob Dole’s campaign for U.S. House of Representatives from the 1st district of Kansas in 1962. Huck served as Dole's campaign manager. A segment of correspondence is arranged alphabetically by county and includes letters with people in those areas, and people who helped with the campaign. Contents of other files are arranged chronologically and include considerable quantities of Dole and Boyd correspondence with others in the campaign, James French in particular.
Found in the political series is a group of "general correspondence" that is arranged in chronological order, 1932-1988. Correspondents comprise a "who's who" in state and national politics including Ed Arn, George H.W. Bush, Arthur Capper, Frank Carlson, Bob Dole, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Alf Landon, Clifford Hope, Jr., Nancy Landon Kassebaum [Baker], Ronald Reagan, Pat Roberts, and others.
Huck Boyd was an official delegate to Republican National Conventions and served on the Republican National Committee. Conventions represented in the papers include those of 1968 (Richard Nixon), 1972 (Nixon), 1976 (Ford and Dole), 1980 (Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush), and 1984 (Reagan and Bush). There are files related to his service on the Republican National Committee and the Kansas Republican State Committee.
The 4th series in the Boyd Papers, Organizations and Subjects, document the impressive breadth of Huck's involvement in areas other than his newspaper and political interests. Of significance is the coverage of his appointment to the Kansas Board of Regents (1953-1959), the body that oversees the state institutions of higher learning, including K-State.
Of major importance is the documentation of Huck's involvement in the creation and operation of the Mid-States Port Authority, 1980-1984. This organization was established to save railroad service to rural areas of Kansas using the track of the Rock Island Railroad when it declared bankruptcy. Included is correspondence, legal and financial documents, and related material. Boyd and others worked with business and political leaders, including John Carlin, governor of Kansas, to make this a successful endeavor for the people of Kansas.
There is a substantial number of files related to the Huck Boyd Foundation in Phillipsburg and the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development established with Kansas State University under the direction of Ron Wilson. These entities were formed after Huck’s death and reflect Marie's impact on their establishment and operation, 1992-2001.
Other strengths of the Organizations and Subject series are the files related to the Kansas Association of Mental Health and renewable resources. Additional organizations include the Dane Hansen Foundation (1973-1970) and William Allen White Foundation, 1971-1981. Various other organizations and subjects are included but they contain fewer documents.
Speeches, Series 5 (1948-1980), contain Huck's speeches to a variety of civic, educational, organizations, businesses. Many of them consist of handwritten notes which make them difficult to use for research.
Series 6, Awards and Honors (1956-1993), provides documentation of the impressive number of significant awards and honors that Huck received over several decades. Of special interest are files related to Huck Boyd Day in Phillipsburg (1977), Kansan of the Year (1975 and 1979), and the Kansas State University Alumni Association Medallion Award (1983). Approximately 40 other honors are represented in the series.
The numerous organizations and professional and personal activities of Marie Boyd are documented in Series 7 and cover the years 1929-2004. A major research strength of her papers is her involvement in a variety of women’s organizations and the leadership positions she held. These groups include the Kansas Federation of Women’s Clubs, Women's Kansas Day Club, Phillips County Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, PEO Sisterhood, Gray Ladies, Order of the Eastern Star, and PTA. Her association with other groups is documented to a lesser degree. It is interesting to note that her mother-in-law, Mamie Boyd, was very active in the many of the same organizations. Her involvement is documented in the Mamie Alexander Boyd Papers found in the University Archives. Collectively, they document the women’s movement as reflected in the state and national organizations that formed and grew in the 20th century.
One box in the series illustrates the important role she played in the political arena both with Huck and independently. It contains files related to various Republican Party entities and conferences as well as correspondence with Bob and Elizabeth Dole.
A large group of correspondence (1936-2003) contains letters with individuals related to businesses, organizations, politics, education, and personal activities. People who stand out include William Avery, Frank Carlson, Richard and Pat Nixon, Anne Armstrong, Marianna Beach, Keith Sebelius, Mike Hayden, and George H. Bush.
Her personal files contain letters with family members, including Huck from the 1930s and friends such as Nancy Landon Kassebaum, Pat Roberts and family, and the Doles.
The bulk of the material in Series 8-Travel (1957-1982) relates to Huck's participation in the United National Economic and Society Conference in Switzerland, 1979. This is significant because he was one of only two U.S. laymen invited to the conference. Marie accompanied him on the trip. The other files are mostly related to personal trips and vacations.
The small number of ledgers and documents in Series 9-Financial (1933-1981) are somewhat incomplete and are related to the Boyd Publishing Company and Phillips County Review, the Boyd's financial interests in other companies, and personal finance and income tax matters.
Series 10-Printed Material (1904-2004) contains primarily newspapers clippings, periodicals, and ephemera (booklets, flyers, etc.). The newspaper clippings have been photocopied for preservation reasons and organized in two groups to retain their original order, chronological and alphabetical. A significant portion of the chronological files relate to Huck's activities from 1949-1987; other members of the family are also included. The clippings in alphabetical order are filed according to organization, person, and subject. There is a separate group related to politics.
The periodicals are organized alphabetically by title. The include publications from journalism groups, organizations, educational institutions, and businesses.
The collection of ephemera contains a wide assortment of booklets, fliers, and brochures. Represented are educational institutions, organizations, events, communities, politics, awards, and others.
Oversize items in Series 11 are stored in a flat box. Included are editions of newspapers that cover events related to members of the Boyd family (e.g., celebrations or deaths), and celebrations of Kansas communities such as centennials. Other oversize material includes awards and certificates.
The small number of scrapbooks (1950-1982) in Series 12 are related to politics (Boyd for governor in 1960 and 1964; Republican National Committee/Bob Dole, 1971), women's organizations (PEO, 1981-1982), travel, Dane G. Hansen Foundation (1967-1978), Huck Boyd Appreciation Night (1972), and Huck Boyd Day (1977)
There are audio and video tapes in Series 13-Audio Visual (1960-1984). The majority of the series consists of audio cassette tapes related to Huck's speeches and awards and the Republican Party. The latter contains items associated with Bob Dole, Ronald Reagan, and Dick Richards, and a variety of other tapes political in content. The six reel-to-reel tapes concern Huck’s gubernatorial campaign in 1960. The three video cassettes are from the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas.
There are several hundred images in Series 14-Photographs. They are organized according to family, people, organizations, and events. Many of the photos are unidentified and not dated but they run from the early 1900s through the 1990s. In addition to numerous photos of many family members, there is a large number of national and state political leaders, including many U.S. presidents (Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan). Others include Bob Dole, Keith Sebelius, Spiro Agnew, and Edward Arn. Many of the photos are inscribed to Huck and Marie.
The majority of the artifacts in Series 15 (1936-1992), the last series in the collection, concern honors and politics. Most of the honors are represented by plaques and medallions/medals and are political in nature. Many of them were presented to Huck by the Republican National Committee and presidential candidates for his outstanding service. Others are awards presented to Huck by organizations, newspaper groups, charities, and educational institutions, including Kansas State University.
The largest number of three dimensional items consists of a variety of formats related to politics: buttons, pins, badges, elephant shaped figures, license plates, and numerous other pieces. They represent politicians and campaigns from Alf Landon in the 1930s to Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Others represented are Wendell Willkie, Dave Owen, Frank Carlson, Robert Bennett, Keith Sebelius, Bob Dole, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, George H. W. Bush, and more. Items associated with the Republican Party in general are in the collection.
