Alfalfa Lawn Records / Lewis Family Papers
Introduction
The collection of Alfalfa Lawn Farm Records/Lewis Family Papers was donated to the University Archives of Kansas State University in 1988 by Francis Lewis. It documents the business affairs of the Alfalfa Lawn Farm (ALF) of Larned, Kansas, primarily those of Walter and Francis Lewis. The major activity of the Farm involved the breeding, promoting, exhibiting, and marketing of the American Polled Hereford, for which it had a national reputation. The varied personal activities of Walter and Francis Lewis are also described in the material.
As graduates of Kansas State University, and prominent leaders in the cattle industry in the United States, Walter and Francis Lewis were associated with many faculty and administrators at K-State, including Don Good, Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry. When Walter Lewis died in 1987, Dr. Good coordinated the arrangements for having the collection donated to the University Archives.
The business records and family papers span the years 1930 to 1987 and they are organized in seven major series; Correspondence, Francis Lewis, Travel, Financial, Cattle, Photographs, and Artifacts. They are housed in 93 document boxes that comprise 42 linear feet of shelf space.
Processing of the collection was completed in 2002 by David Arends and Tara Pool, student employees.
Chronology
1910 John M. Lewis starts the Alfalfa Lawn Farm (ALF) herd with one bull and ten cows (Lewis came to Kansas
from Illinois in 1909 because of his interest in farming alfalfa).
1912 Walter Lewis born.
1931 Walter Lewis graduates from Larned (KS) High School.
1935 Walter Lewis graduates from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal
Husbandry. John Lewis turns breeding of herd over to Walter; Joe, John's other son, became involved
with ALF at later date.
1937 Francis Lewis (then Francis Aicher) graduates from KSU.
1938 Walter and Francis married
1939 Robert Lewis born to Walter and Francis (KSU class of 1961).
1941 Martha Lewis born to Walter and Francis (KSU class of
1963).
1953 Walter judges Polled Herefords at Royal Easter Show in Sydney, Australia.
1953-1961 Walter serves as Director of the American Hereford Association, Kansas City.
1955-1968 Walter is official beef judge for Intercollegiate Livestock judging contest at the International
Livestock Show, Chicago, Illinois.
1956 Alfalfa Lawn Farm wins "Best Six Head" at National Polled Hereford Show.
1956-1957 Walter elected Vice-President of the American Hereford Association.
1957-1958 Walter elected President of the American Hereford Association.
1958-1967 Walter serves as Director of the Pawnee County Cooperative Association.
1959 Walter and Joe win the American Royal Reserve Grand Champion Steer.
1960 Walter a delegate to the World Hereford Conference, Kansas City.
1961 Robert Lewis graduates from KSU College of Agriculture.
1963 Martha Lewis graduates from Kansas State University.
1965-1969 Walter, Director of the American Polled Hereford Association (Vice Pres.,1966 and President, 1968).
1967-1972 Walter, President of the Pawnee County Cooperative Association.
1967 Walter elected Vice-President of the American Polled Hereford Association.
1968 Walter successfully lobbies to keep the American Polled Hereford Association in the World Conference
President of the American Polled Hereford Association (only breeder to ever be president of both
this organization and the American Hereford Association.
Delegate to the World Hereford Conference in Sydney, Australia.
1969 Walter judges at the Regina Bull Show in Canada and the National Polled Hereford Show of England.
Martha Lewis graduates with a Ph.D. from Penn. State University.
John Lewis (Walter and Joe's father) dies.
1971-1972 Walter a member of the Livestock and Meat Industry Council, Manhattan, KS
1972 Walter serves as advisor to American Polled Hereford Associates delegates in South Africa.
Alfalfa Lawn Farm consists of 3450 acres of alfalfa, milo, wheat, and registered Polled Herefords
1979 Joe Lewis and his son's bull wins Grand Champion at Ft. Worth, Texas.
