He built a new home and in 1960 Russell and Nikki took in two of Russell's early teen-aged great nephews, Larry and Steve Young. Approximately a year later Russell purchased a newspaper stand in downtown Los Angeles to give his great nephews work. Russell's family describes him as being from the "old school" and believed 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' Russell kept the newstand until his great nephews were both in college then he sold it.

"Russell became a minister in the Church of God in Christ denomination in 1955. during his time as a minister he served as a legal advisor to the pastor of his church. He was also a well versed saxophone player."
