James Wendell Pryor was born on 08 Apr 1897 in Missouri, the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Pryor. The family is originally from Kentucky where James' older brother, John, was born, but they moved to Kansas City between 1895 and 1897, where James and his younger siblings, Arthur and Thelma, were born. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Kansas City, KS, in 1917.
On 12 Sep 1917, he entered K-State, studying mechanical engineering. He received credit against the military science requirement for 2 months, 4 days service in the US Army. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He lived at 618 Yuma before moving to the Phi Beta Sigma Chapter House, 1020 Colorado, his last two years.
He graduated from K-State on 01 Jun 1922 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he taught at Prairie View State Normal, Prairie View, TX.
In 1927, he married Eunice, an Alabama native, and in 1930 they were both working at the Jackson County Home for Delinquent Negro Boys in Missouri. He was an engineer and she was a teacher. During the summers of 1930 and 1935, he took courses in agriculture and vocational education at K-State.
James Pryor died in June 1974 in Kansas City, Jackson, MO.
