Marjorie Honstead was born on July 15, 1920 in Waterville, KS to Nellie and Fred Honstead. After graduating from Topeka High School, she attended Christ Hospital School of Nursing, which is now Stormont-Vail in Topeka, KS. She decided to join the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and was appointed to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on June 15, 1943.
Lt. Honstead was stationed at Schick General Hospital, Clinton, IA, from June to August 1943. The hospital was named in honor of First Lt. William Rhinehart Schick, one of the first U.S. army medical corps to be killed in action in WWII.
