Books at the Beach. 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., Beach Museum of Art. Not your traditional book discussion group, Books at the Beach will use artworks and exhibitions to enhance the reader’s experience. The theme is Japanese American Internment camps, inspired by Roger Shimomura’s art about his family’s stay at Minidoka in Idaho. Suggested readings include Farewell to Manzanar and The Legend of Fire Horse Woman by Jeanne Watsuki Houston, No No Boy by John Okada, Obasan and Itsuka by Joy Kogawa, 21st Century Manzanar: A Novel, by Perry Miyake, Nisei Daughter by Monica Sone,When the Emporer was Divine by Julie Otsuka, and Citizen 13660 by Mine Okubo. A complete list of books can be found at the museum and Claflin Books. Bring a brown bag at 11:30, dessert and coffee will be served at both times.

Lecture: KansAsians: the Asian-American experience in Kansas from race riots to Roger Shimomura by Bill Tsutsui. 5:30 p.m., Beach Museum of Art. Dr. Tsutsui's talk will be a survey of the heritage of Asian Americans in Kansas. He will pay particular attention to how Roger Shimomura, the most celebrated Asian American resident of Kansas in the state's history, reflects this larger experience. He will also discuss how Kansas has sometimes been a hostile environment for Americans of Asian decent, but has more often (and especially since World War II) provided opportunity and a welcoming environment for immigrants from Asia. Tsutsui is an Associate Dean for International Studies and Professor of History at Kansas University.

K-State Theatre joins with Ebony Theatre for a main stage production of Lynn Nottage's critically acclaimed, Intimate Apparel. The story, set in Manhattan in 1905, revolves around Esther who lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She has managed to stuff a goodly sum of money into her quilt over the years in hopes of one day opening a beauty parlor. As her friends in the boarding house marry and move away a lonely Esther marries a man she barely knows who absconds with her savings. The dignified, stoic Esther returns to the boarding house to use her gifted hands to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
