Melaragno, Michelle G. Quantification in Science : the VNR dictionary
of engineering units and measures. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold,
1991. This book explains the quantities used in the various sciences,
especially in physics and technology, in simple terms. This volume
contains an assortment of subjects such as: a schematic organization
of modern science, a list of important physicists, biographical sketches
of the Nobel laureates in physics, a brief list of scientists after
whom units have been named, and the units themselves with tables of
abbreviations and conversions.

DICTIONARIES
McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Physics. Sybil P. Parker, ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, c1984.
By its very nature, this specialized dictionary is as authoritative as the parent dictionary, McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, from which it is derived. Areas of classical physics, such as acoustics, electricity, mechanics, & optics are represented, as well as other areas such as particle physics, quantum mechanics, and solid-state physics.

Schubert, Joachim.
Dictionary of effects and phenomena in Physics : descriptions, applications, tables. Weiheim, Germany :VCH; New York, NY, c1987.
This is a good basic dictionary of effects and phenomena in Physics. The definitions are straightforward, with "standard" literature references which lead the reader to classic literature in the field.

The Encyclopedia of Physics. Robert M. Besancon, ed. New York : McGraw- Hill, 1985.
This reflects the exciting work done in the rapidly expanding fields of particle physics, gauge theory, quantum thermodynamics, electroweak theory, and the grand unified theories. The increasingly interdisciplinary nature of science is noted by the inclusion of articles in areas such as biophysics, health physics, and volcanology.

Home, Roderick Weir. The History of classical Physics: a selected annotated bibliography. New York : Garland Pub., 1984.
This work contains more than 1,300 entries covering writings on the history of classical physics. It does not include primary sources, except for collected works of individual physicists and certain works which contain "significant amounts of historical commentary." The time period of commentary is approximately 1700-1900, or from the Scientific Revolution to the beginning of modern physics.

Information Sources in Physics. Dennis F. Shaw, ed. 2d ed. Boston: Butterworths, 1985.
A totally revised edition of Coblan's 'Use of Physics Literature' (1975). He defines physics and lists the broad classes of natural phenomena with which physics is concerned. Shaw also discusses the information tranfer process, as well as organizations such as INSPEC and their impact on physics literature. Other chapters which deal with topics other than classes of physics subjects cover science libraries, abstracting, indexing, and online searches, the history of physics, and patent literature.
