Hawkins, Nancy | Morse Department of Special Collections

Name: Hawkins, Nancy

Historical Note: Nancy Hawkins served as the American Council on Consumer Interests representative to the United Nations from 1963–1991 (and perhaps longer). From 1963–1972 and 1984–1991 (and perhaps longer), Nancy represented the International Organization of Consumers Unions at the United Nations. She worked on consumer issues that were discussed by the UN’s Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly. Nancy and Persia Campbell worked to have Consumer Education and Information included in the economic rights section of the Declaration on Human Rights. Nancy wanted to make sure future students of the consumer movement had access to this information. Nancy also served from 1960–62 as the president of the Consumers League of New Jersey.
