Historical Note:

The Kansas Music Teachers Association (KMTA) is a state wide organization for professional music teachers. It includes music instructors affiliated with primary, secondary, and post-secondary educational institutions as well as independent teachers.

1869                Topeka Musical Union founded, predecessor of the Kansas Music Teachers Association (KMTA).

1886                First organizational meeting of Kansas State Music Teachers Association: William MacDonald, Dean of Music at the University of Kansas, elected first president.

1891                First cooperation with Music Teachers National Association (MTNA)

1908                Meeting in Wichita to reorganize and revitalize the organization.

1921                KSMTA took a membership with the MTNA

1941                The word “state” was dropped from name so the association became known as KMTA

1952                The KMTA became fully affiliated with the MTNA

1969                Beginning of Student Composition Contests

1971                Beginning of Musicianship Program

1986                Centennial Celebration

2002                Celebrates 50 years of affiliation with MTNA

                        MTNA Endowment honors former KMTA president Marguerite Miller
