Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection is composed of materials that were gathered and donated by department staff member Pat Patton and includes artifacts, photographs, articles, books, scrapbooks, and other memorabilia related to the history of Kansas State University between the late 1880s and 2008. The materials described in the container list include 1) research topics of Ms. Patton, such as Minnie Howell Champe (first African American woman to graduate from K-State) and the local chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, and 2) items she collected, including athletics materials and documentation of student life and culture.

Appraisal Information: Materials acquired because they document Kansas State University history, especially student life and culture.

Separated Materials:

Oversized materials, pennants, and artifacts were separated based on departmental procedures and placed in various locations, described in separation sheets.

Identified photographs of K-State staff members and students and other photos related to Kansas State University from the 1880s to the 1920s were separated and placed in the Photograph Collection—Subject files and Photograph Collection—People files. Commencement programs from 1913 to 1942 were also separated and are now located with the commencement program collection. Finally, there were a few books pulled from the collection for standard cataloging.

Materials include a campus panoramic print from the early 20th century, a Gilman Legends Series poster of Bill Snyder, a University Park poster with a waterskiing Willie, a steel company ad featuring Ahearn Field House, a print and ink drawing of the Ruth Hoeflin House by Emil Fischer, K-State pennants, a print of Emil Fischer's drawing of the Goodnow House, and a halftone of the K-State student body from circa 1910.
